Wise Man in my Mind
A poem by Timothious Clayton Smith
I stared into the night moon lit.
Autumn winds caress my cheek.
Sometimes I come to this place and just sit.
This mountain top in my mind, its very peak.
Here the wise man sits seeking Enlightement.
The winds howl about him.
Lights shine about hime the cast of enchantment.
From all understanding of likfe he stems.
I place myself in front of him.
I stare deep into his face and see my own.
Deep is the well of his soul as it limbs
Here I find home.
This time I ahve come to ask a question.
Which he already knows.
"Elf prince, what is the first lesson?"
"To love oneself and forget your woes."
"Elf prince, why do you seek love?"
"To fill the hole that's in my life."
"And if it avoids you like wild doves?"
"Then there is much toil and strife."
"Can you grow without it?"
"Without love I lay dormant."
"Can you not go beyond this bit?"
"It is a castle in the road and I can not storm it."
"Then your road is clear."
"I have found it but the way--"
"So there is one you find dear."
"She is fearful I must say."
"Ah! Yes that one upon your mind.
She fears what effects she brings
but most of all being one of your kind.
It's a road you have already walked that she sings.
"She knows not that is the way to walk.
Life has taught not to travel that way.
Things happen to her that cause people to talk.
She is not sure what to say."
"If she must walk this road
I already know the way.
I will guide her and carry half the load.
I really don't care what others say."
"What if, my son, at the end,
once you have brought her through,
she decides to go on to not where you've been
and to also depart from you?"
"Then I have gambled and lost--
but for a chance of her happiness
I will take the risk of any cost.
Even if it's to sacrifice my own bliss."
"To journey this road take care.
Like taming the fox,
sometimes you must not be there.
Sometimes she will throw stones and rocks.
"Sometimes she won't even know you're around.
Sometimes you will have to carry her through
and remember to always give in to common ground.
Thus then she will too.
"For if it is her love you seek.
Be strong enough to go on farther.
This journey is not for the weak
but for the strong at heart to barter.
"Your footfalls will echo in the halls
and both your pasts will come up.
Let not the noise bring you to falls
but feed on its strength as your sup.
"Guide her true even if it is not the way
that will bring her to you.
For if you don't in future you will pay
then your road will be blue too.
"Shower her with love and affinity
when the time gives it the call.
Give of yourself infinity
not the writings on the wall."
I stood back as I felt the wind
and chew over what the wise man said.
I knew the words to be my own again
as they blossemed in my head.
